We are all familiar with William Gibson’s famous quote “The future is already here — it's just not very evenly distributed”. The video What Shall We Do Next? (Sequence #2) is part of a broader research the artist had initiated a few years earlier by collecting what he defines as “an archive of future gestures”.
The patents of some gestures such as ‘slide-to-unlock’ are regularly filed and owned by ICT companies. These patents define collections of gestures that we will perform when devices will be put on the market and owned by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, Sony and others. Julien Prévieux began to collect such gestures in 2006, creating a series of works that re-elaborate and contextualise the contents in diverse formats: animated films, dance performances and videos. Sequence #2 is a film involving six performers enacting some of the gestures and diagrams sourced from the patents as if they were dance scores. For INBTWN the film is presented together with a database of original patents filed by companies. Designed in collaboration with the artist, the database presents a part of the original documents he has collected, sourced from the USPTO archive (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Through making the archive of original patents available for download from the website, INBTWN presents part of the research and studies that lead to the creation of the video artwork. Within it, traces and images of the scores enacted and appropriated by performers, can be found. Browsing through the files or downloading and reading the original patents, we might recognise some of the actions and gestures that we perform daily, and find out who they belong to. Or maybe we could get to know some new ones which we will perform in a few years.

Patent No.: US 8,558,759 B1
HAND GESTURES TO SIGNIFY WHAT IS IMPORTANT

Abstract

In accordance with example embodiments, hand gestures can be used to provide user input to a wearable computing device, and in particular to identify, signify, or otherwise indicate what may be considered or classified as important or worthy of attention or notice. A wearable computing device, which could include a head-mounted display (HMD) and a video camera, may recognize known hand gestures and carry out particular actions in response.

GESTURE RECOGNITION APPARATUS, GESTURE RECOGNITION METHOD, AND GESTURE RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Abstract

A gesture recognition apparatus for recognizing postures or gestures of an object person based on images of the object person captured by cameras. The gesture recognition apparatus includes: a face/fingertip position detection means which detects a face position and a fingertip position of the object person in three-dimensional space; and a posture/gesture recognition means which operates to detect changes of the fingertip position by a predetermined method.

WORKING WITH 3D OBJECTS

Abstract

Three-dimensional objects can be generated based on two-dimensional objects. A first user input identifying a 2D object presented in a user interface can be detected, and a second user input including a 3D gesture input that includes a movement in proximity to a surface can be detected. A 3D object can be generated based on the 2D object according to the first and second user inputs, and the 3D object can be presented in the user interface.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROCESSING RAW DATA OF TRACK PAD DEVICE

Abstract

An input device and system are described that acquires (measures) raw track pad sensor data and transmits this data to a host computer where it is analyzed by an application executing on one or more host computer central processing units. The resulting input processing architecture provides a track pad input device that is both lower in cost to manufacture and more flexible than prior art track pad input devices.

IMAGE ANALYSIS FOR USER AUTHENTICATION

Abstract

A user can be authenticated to any of a number of computing devices using an authentication process that recognizes the user and verifies that an actual human being is attempting to be authenticated, in order to minimize the ability of another person to spoof the authentication process. A user accessing one of these devices can have image information captured, which can be used with a facial recognition process, to recognize the user, and with a human verification process, to verify that the facial information corresponds to a human user.
